Ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of our aging adults becomes of utmost importance as they enter senior care facilities. Daily wellness check-ins play a vital role in this care.

In senior care facilities across the United States, check-ins have evolved into more than just a routine task; they signify that a senior resident is not just a name on a list but a valued member of a community.

Certain states, such as California, have acknowledged the significance of regular check-ins for senior residents and have implemented legislation to enforce them. Nevertheless, the traditional check-in procedure in long-term senior care facilities is often manual and labor-intensive, requiring staff to visit each resident’s room twice daily to manually record their status. This process also means residents must physically place something on their door, which can pose challenges, especially for those with limited mobility.

Recognizing that staff time is invaluable, automating labor-intensive tasks like check-ins can liberate care teams, enabling them to invest more meaningful moments in building human connections with residents while preserving resident dignity in the process.

Introducing: Serenity’s new automated Check-In App designed for Independent Living residents. This app simplifies daily check-ins, and as a result, can save staff the equivalent of a half-time employee. For residents, the process is nearly invisible, with the ability to check in via the community-owned Alexa device in their room. This system also generates a dynamic report in real time, allowing staff to monitor who has checked in and who hasn’t.

How Does it Work?

Residents have the flexibility to perform check-ins from their rooms using their Alexa devices. Check-ins are available during two separate time slots: 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

To check in, residents simply need to say, ‘Alexa, check me in,’ at any time during the designated check-in window.

If a resident hasn’t checked in, Alexa will provide both verbal and visual reminders to ensure no one misses their check-in time. It’s all about making sure everyone has the opportunity to check in promptly.

Can a Staff Member Check a Resident in?

Yes, with the appropriate permissions. At your community, specific staff members can perform resident check-ins using the Serenity mobile or browser app. To facilitate this, these staff members will notice a new ‘Check-In’ app on their Serenity platform. To manually check-in a resident, staff simply selects the check-in command, selects the resident, and voila!

Check-In Reports

With each new Check-In session, a fresh message is automatically generated, providing real-time, at-a-glance insights during the session. This feature offers a convenient overview of resident check-in statuses at any given moment.

For a more comprehensive view, the full report can be accessed via an Excel attachment. This attachment is consistently updated with the latest information, ensuring you have access to the most current data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How will I know who has not checked in yet?

A: At the end of each check-in session (10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., for example), the responsible party will review the check-in channel. The report will display residents who have “Missed” the check-in time. These are the residents who haven’t checked in and require a phone call or in-person check.

Q: If a resident has not checked in, but they respond when I knock on the door, how do I mark them as checked in?

A: In this scenario, if it’s appropriate, kindly ask the resident to please check in via their Alexa device. If it’s not suitable, for example, if it’s late at night or the resident seems to be in a hurry, you can use your mobile device, open Serenity, and check in the resident with a simple command. If the resident doesn’t respond, please follow your normal protocol.

Q: What if a resident is away from the community for a day or more?

A: Residents may be away from the community for various reasons. In such cases, you can mark the resident as ‘away’ using the Serenity mobile or browser app.
